Dear All,

On Sunday 12 December 2010, as the sun comes close to setting over the Mumbai skyline, a large group will walk along the sea strip of Marine Drive to raise awareness about a little-known area of childhood development: developmental disabilities. We at Ummeed invite you to be a part of this inspirational event.
The Ummeed Walk is a key event for Ummeed. We use it as a way to build community, raise awareness and raise funds. It is an extremely energizing experience for the Ummeed staff, our patients, their parents and our numerous supporters to see everyone turn out in such large numbers to support Ummeed.
This year, we would like the walk to be even bigger and better and we hope that we have your support.
Here’s what you can do:
· Spread the Word among your family and friends and make sure they show up for the walk. Ask them to spread the word further so we can add a lot of new members to the Ummeed family.
· Bring your Kids so the Ummeed Walk becomes a family day out
· Sport the Ummeed T-shirt.
· Confirm your presence by emailing ummeedwalk@gmail.com
The Ummeed Walk takes place on Sunday 12 December 2010 at 4.30pm. Please gather opposite NCPA at Nariman Point. We will walk till the Princess Street flyover and back to NCPA.
Looking forward to seeing you in large numbers at the Ummeed Walk!

An online review on Carol’s book "The Out of Sync Child"

“If you are a parent or a teacher of a child with bewildering or inconsistent behavior problems, this book explains comprehensively and clearly the often conflicting symptoms of children with SI dysfunction. Most exciting is the hope that children can now be diagnosed at an early age so they can begin OT therapy when it has a chance to be its most effective. Also exciting is the knowledge that there are many simple things that parents and teachers can do at home and in the classroom to improve the functioning of SI kids. I have recommended this book to dozens of parents who have come back to buy copies for their child's teacher. The book contains an excellent resources guide, too! P.S. Carol Kranowitz does a fabulous job presenting about SI dysfunction at professional workshops. See her if you have the chance.”

Social skills training

Dear Parents and friends,

Hope you all are doing good.

As you all know, Aspire Education Services provides lot of services for our children.

One of our program is the Social Skills program.

Children learn social skills by taking part in games and other group activities. Social skills are part of our life and it is very important to teach our children these skills.

Dr. Brenda Smith who is an associate professor at the university of Kansas, calls this as Hidden Curriculum. The hidden curriculum refers to the set of rules that everyone knows, but no one has been directly taught. These unwritten social rules need to be taught to our children and we need to make our children understand these rules.

How is this done: A small group of 3 to 4 children who may share a set of social goals are grouped together. They learn to interact with each other and learn social skills.

The social goals for each child is set and progress is monitored by data. As the child masters each goal we add on more social goals that are appropriate for the child.

Social skills goals can be as simple as greetings and farewells to having a conversation.

We are starting the Social skills group from the 10th of July at Lakshya-Ghakopar and will be conducted every saturday. There will be 2 batches 10 to 12 and 1 to 4 Pm.

Only 4 children in a batch. The fees would be Rs. 500 for a 2 hours session.

The Schedule will be as follows:

Some of the skills targeted are pre-requisite for learning further skills.
Communication skills will be automatically addressed as it is very important for social interactions though may not be mentioned in the individual goal for the child.

Innovation Labs' device for special children costs one tenth of mkt price

Publication: Economic Times Mumbai; Date: May 7, 2010; Section: India Emerging; Page: 15

MOTOR MECHANICS
Innovation Labs’ device for special children costs one tenth of mkt price
Ravi Teja Sharma

CHILDREN with cerebral palsy are as intelligent as most other kids, but they lag behind because of their poor motor skills. These children can, however, improve their skills if someone or some external aid can augment their communication abilities. This is where Invention Labs steps in.

The four-year old Chennai-based startup has developed a portable device called AVAZ. A child can interact with the device through motion sensors. A nod of the head in a certain way produces characters on the devices and the prediction engine then helps them construct a sentence. It doesn’t stop here. A text-tospeech engine then reads the sentence aloud. But what makes AVAZ unique is that while the cheapest such device in the US costs upwards of $7,000, Invention Labs sells the same for less than one tenth of that price i.e at Rs 30,000 (under $700).

“A product like AVAZ can help not only cerebral palsy patients but also others who might need alternative communication aids,” says Rajul Padmanabhan, director of Vidya Sagar (earlier Spastics Society of India), a voluntary organisation based in Chennai. According to estimates, about 7% of the population is afflicted by some form of disability of which close to 3% would be cerebral palsy patients.

“R&D has been our bread and butter since we started,” says Aswin Chandrasekaran, who is a 2003 batch engineer from IITMadras. Indeed, the four co-founders of Invention—Ashwin Chandrasekharan, Ajit Narayanan, Mohd Adib Ibrahim and Preetham Shivanna (all IIT Madras grads, though not from the same batch)—decided early that generic product development research and R&D was their forte. After three years of research for other companies, they finally launched their first product AVAZ.

After engineering, all of them had gone their own way. When they started talking again in 2006, they were bit by the innovation bug. “We are modeled on global innovation company 3M. We find ideas, develop them and then market them. We are sector agnostic,” Mr Chandrasekaran says. The company was formed considering the four had varied skill—management, engineering and operations—which would make for a well rounded team. Their journey began as a third party R&D unit. Companies looking for cheap outside research to improve product quality or functionality, would give them contracts. “We concentrated on embedded systems space, mostly electronics, putting intelligence into machines.”

That is how Invention got to work with companies like Vortex, which was developing a rural ATM that runs on solar power. They have also worked with ISRO on control systems for their satellites and with the Army on control systems for its simulators.

In their second year, the company explored the idea of developing products of its own and found an opportunity in cerebral palsy. Since then, they have been working with Vidya Sagar in Chennai, which has helped them in their research.

The team has realised that there could be many more uses of the device. Apart from helping children with cerebral palsy, the device could be used by people with Autism, those who might have lost their ability to communicate due to a stroke, patients who are temporarily disabled post an operation and also older people. The hardware will be the same, while the software applications will differ. Padmanabhan though points out that at present the device can only help those who can read. The software for the product is open source and the algorithms have been developed by the team. Using the device, such children have been able to attend regular school and also interact with their peers.

With its first product in place, and a few more in the development stages, the startup is now looking at raising close to $1 million from venture funds. Earlier it had got seed funding from IIT-Madras’ Rural Technology & Business Incubator (RTBI). Till date, Invention operates out of RTBI.

Dear Parents,

I am currently at the University of Southern California pursuing a doctoral degree in occupational therapy. As part of my curriculum, I have undertaken a project to understand the needs and experiences of parents of children with autism spectrum disorders in India.

I would have been happier to do this in person, in India. However university requirements require me to be here and hence I am doing this via a web based survey.

I hereby request you to kindly take some time off your busy schedule and fill the survey with as much depth and detail as possible.

Thanking you in anticipation

Sincerely,

Ashwini Vaishampayan

Forum For Autism- Participation in Mumbai Marathon – Sunday 17th Jan 2010

Forum For Autism- Participation in Mumbai Marathon – Sunday 17th Jan 2010

Hello friends,

On 17th January 2010 we will be running the Mumbai Marathon again… As you already know we are supporting the cause of increasing awareness on Autism.

We are trying to raise funds for the Forum for Autism that helps in creating awareness and also actively participates in helping parents of children affected with this disorder. The Forum for Autism, is a parent support group, a registered Charitable Trust, formed to help out parents of Autistic children in our society.

United Way of Mumbai is the Official Charity Partner to the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2010.

Why do we run the marathon year after year? Because this provides us with a platform to spread awareness about Autism which in turn can help make a difference to the lives of the underprivileged. And this can be achieved by raising pledges.

Pledge raising is when we ask you – friends, family and colleagues to support our run by donating money to the good cause that we have chosen.

We request you to help us by donating for this cause of Autism awareness so that millions of children can be helped with proper diagnosis and early intervention. For donations you can send a cheque payable to “United Way of Mumbai” and courier it to the following address:

Sanjeev Kapoor
C-18, Dalia Estate, Near Fun Republic,
Off New Link Road, Andheri (W),
Mumbai – 400 053
India

Alternatively
You can click on the following link and also donate online…

http://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=146&popup=1&template_id=81

All donations for the Stanchart Marathon are exempt under Sec 80G of the income Tax Act. You will get your receipt and tax deduction certificate after you make a donation for Sanjeev Kapoor’s cause “Forum for Autism”. You can donate as less as you wish or Rs. 500 or any amount you wish to donate for the cause of autism.

Looking forward to a favourable response and thanks in advance for your support.

Warm regards,

Alyona and Sanjeev Kapoor
